MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --Game MVP Ryan Schatz scored the winning goal with just 1:44 remaining as Ransom Everglades (Coconut Grove) defeated Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables) 8-7 in the first game of the inaugural Orange Bowl Lacrosse Classic Saturday at Sun Life Stadium.
The game was tied 3-3 at the half with Ransom’s Jeremy Peters scoring just 3.3 seconds before intermission. It was a tense battle throughout with several lead changes and no one holding more than a 2-goal lead, which Gulliver grabbed by a 6-4 count early in the fourth quarter. Ransom tied the game with 5:35 remaining on a goal by Ben Meland, and from that point the game see-sawed back and forth. Gulliver regained the lead on a goal by Andrew Koffsky with 3:18 remaining.
Ransom tied it less than a minute later, on a goal by Jay Fuster and then Schatz won it with his second goal of the game.
Jupiterdefeated the Pine Crest School (Fort Lauderdale) 11-8 in the middle game of the classic. Jupiter trailed 4-3 at the half, but took a one-goal lead at 8-7 at the end of the third quarter and broke it open with three goals in the final stanza. Daniel Soviero earned game MVP honors with four goals and two assists, while James Holdt added three goals. Mac Monroe and Stone Wharton paced Pine Crest with three goals a piece.
In the nightcap, Saint Andrew’s (Boca Raton) broke open a tie game with nine goals in the third period, five by Conor Whipple, to defeat the Benjamin School (Palm Beach Gardens) 16-7. Benjamin had two goal leads three times in the first half, but Grant Mahler tied the game at four with just 7.8 seconds remaining in the stanza. Whipple finished with a total of nine goals to earn game MVP honors.
Saint Andrew’s has won 14 state high school championships overall and until losing to Lake Highland Prep a year ago had won eight in a row. Benjamin was undefeated a year ago and captured the last two state club championships.
An estimated 4,000 people attended throughout the day, which also featured a clinic – the Casey Powell Lacrosse Experience – between the second and third games as well as youth lacrosse games.
